Mayor of Atlanta?

After Shirley Franklin boldy stepped in and replaced Bill Campbell's massively corrupt stint as mayor with her own slightly less corrupt mayorship, a candidate who might might actually end corruption in the mayor's office (albeit temporarily) is deciding whether or not to run for the position. I know you're sitting there thinking, "Yeah, right. Who are you going to name that I would actually trust as mayor?" Clark Howard. Yes, Clark Howard is seriously considering running for Mayor in Atlanta. He threw around the idea a few years ago as an opponent to Bill Campbell but that never really materialized. I hope he does run this time around. The City of Atlanta could use a leader who knows how to save more, spend less, and avoid getting ripped off.

Awww... Shirley's not that bad, is she? She's at least a competent adminstrator. Still, Howard would be entertaining and his common sense approach ought to work well. I wonder how the City Council would take it. I live (inside the perimeter) in unincorporated DeKalb. Now, that's corruption!

She is very competent. Her biggest transgression though is appointing completely incompetent people to leadership positions as political favors. Compared to Campbell or the DeKalb and Fulton County (pre-city mania) commissions that's nothing but it's still very bad for the city. I'm far from the Perimeter these days but I'd still love to see that sort of corruption stop.

Who the ???? is Clark Howard? Perhaps I was living under a rock, but I never read his columns nor listened to his radio show - but he has name recognition around the ATL?

Thought I paid attention to that sort of thing....

His name recognition in Atlanta comes mostly from his work with WSB TV, especially his Christmas toy roundup where he buys all the popular toys for Christmas season and has kids test them (the punchline is almost always that the must-have toy off the year is crap) and his Friday Flier where he announces where to find some dirt cheap airfare on last minute sales. His radio show is consistently the 2nd highest rated show in Atlanta behind Boortz. That's pretty impressive given its 1-4 timeslot. He doesn't really do columns. His name recognition is probably the lowest around our age group but given the voter turnout in our age group, I don't think that's too big an issue. So no, he doesn't have much name recognition in the ATL but he does have plenty of name recognition in Atlanta.
