Stuff Cousin Pat Likes

Usually, I am labeled as the "wrong kind of white person." My taste in t-shirts doesn't cut it, I threatened to move to New Orleans instead of Canada, and I don't usually wear any outdoor performance clothes.

But, dang, I got pegged on this one. The graphic included is even my favorite item of the line in my favorite color. I've worn out three pair of those already. But this does explain why my students are always "ribbing" me about my footwear...

"But why do white people love them so uniformly? It is pretty simple really. A few years ago it came out that Nike (and other manufacturers) were producing their shoes in Asian sweatshops and then selling them for a very high profit margin. White people were outraged, they generally prefer that children in developing nations first finish high school before working in shoe-producing sweatshops. Otherwise they might look foolish when their co-workers are talking about Catcher in the Rye."

Whatever. Anytime I ask a New Balance zealot about their choice in shoes, they go on and on about how Nikes and Reeboks are bad for their feet but New Balance are good for their feet. Some podiatrist or another said so. If white people were really so concerned about sweat shops, it would probably show up elsewhere in their clothing decisions. Personally, I'll wear K-Swiss until they stop making the classics in my size. I just need a flat piece of rubber and some leather to hold it down.

So Cousin Pat, SAWB and my son apparently love the shoes "white people love." While to be honest with you Pat, I've never really paid attention to your footwear, I know my household wears them because they are the only shoes that are made to fit around "Fred Flintstone" feet, which SAWB so lovingly and genetically passed on to his offspring. From my perspective, they are great durable shoes to fit a variety of feet for a reasonable price. You would think that would be something all people would like. But next time my son asks for new shoes, maybe I'll tell him not to be so racist!!!

My podiatrist did recommend New Balance shoes. But, my current ones are a pair of 972 walking shoes and a pair of 977 hiking boots. The boots are extremely comfortable which is why white people, and others, really like New Balances. I've also found Newbies to be more durable than Nikes.

Oh, yeah, the lady is right!

With size 14EE feet, Newbies fit me better than other brands too.
